Oscars: Will Glenn Close Win Best Actress?

You get a little of everything in a varied field for the Best Actress Oscar. Glenn Close pulled a shocker when she was nominated “Albert Nobbs,” in which she plays a woman forced to live as a man in 19th Century Ireland. Alas the film is almost totally unknown, so we can’t see her pulling the shocker a second time.

But it’s tough to count out anyone else. Meryl Streep in “Iron Lady” was – well – her typical awesome Meryl self, and she has a shot to win as long as voters aren’t sick of sending her Oscar love. Michelle Williams faithfully executed a great Marilyn Monroe in the biopic “My Week With Marilyn,” and Rooney Mara successfully pulled off the nose-ring in “Dragon Tattoo” (and physical transformations are always the stuff of Oscars).

So no, we won’t count them out, but something tells us that Viola Davis is the one to watch. Her quiet stoicism helped make “The Help” a fantastic film and true contender for Best Picture – and we think she’ll be equally composed and elegant when she gives her big speech on Oscar night.
