30-Day Smackdown: Which Will Make More, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" or "Ice Age: Continental Drift"?
WHO WILL WIN--a third animated sequel or a fourth? That’s the question for these two features, both offering crews of hilarity-enducing animalia based on premises that are known winners. Madagascar 3 takes the African animals to Europe this time (the third continent to conquer, after the original’s North American and the sequel’s Africa), whereas Ice Age’s glacial creatures are somehow skipping thousands of years of evolution and geological history to stumble through continental drift in the fourth installment of the series. If we’re looking just at the numbers here, Madagascar’s forerunners made $65M (Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa) and $47M (Madagascar) in their respective opening weekends; and the previous Ice Age movies made $46M (Ice Age), $68M (Ice Age: The Meltdown), and $41M (Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), respectively, which puts both movies basically at the same level. But we think that the Ice Age franchise may have lost some steam, whereas Madagascar has been building anticipation after only two releases so far to Ice Age’s three. So, Europe’s Most Wanted may turn out to be America’s Most Wanted this summer!
