The Emmys are often anticlimactic, as often it’s obvious when a behemoth front-runner will walk away with the prize (think “Mad Men” and “Modern Family” in recent years). But perhaps this year’s comedy race will provide some suspense. Yes, there’s your usual frontrunner, “Modern Family,” but the show might – just might – be starting to show its age. Ratings toward the end of last year dipped below the 10-million mark; that might raise eyebrows when the show started off the season with a whopping 14.5-million premiere. So who might catch it? While “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “30 Rock” are true classics, they didn’t make quite enough of a splash this year to be counted among the contenders. But the other three candidates could make a run – HBO’s “Girls” and Showtime’s “Veep” due to their superb writing and creative vision, and “Big Bang Theory” due to its continually improving quality and the brute force of its enormous audience. (How does CBS do it?) We’ll peg “Modern” as the favorite, but “Big Bang” is not far behind.
