THE FIFTH INSTALLMENT in the “Resident Evil” franchise, “Retribution” should be a reliable choice for video-game enthusiasts, sci-fi fans, and Milla Jovovich admirers alike. Opening in September, just like the last three films in the series, it’s not going for summer blockbuster status, but we think it won’t have a problem doing just fine. As the numbers show, the audience is clearly there and these films have basically built a cult audience at this point: 2010’s “Afterlife” made $26.7M opening weekend, 2007’s “Extinction” made $23.7M, and 2004’s “Apocalypse” $23M. In addition, fans are eagerly anticipating the release of the new Resident Evil 6 video game, set to come out on October 2nd, so the movie’s timing couldn’t be better. Also, the triple-format release (2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D) shouldn’t hurt things either. We’re all about this franchise, being the second only to “Alien” as the biggest sci-fi series with a badass woman in the starring role. Go Milla, kick some alien ass!
