Reuniting Kiefer Sutherland with FOX was good enough – and then FOX threw in producer Tim Kring of “Heroes" fame. Then Tim threw in an interesting storyline, where an autistic child uncovers secret mathematical connections between seemingly unrelated people and events, uncovering a vast conspiracy in the process. Home run, right? Well, “Touch” did barrel out of the gate with a big 12-million sneak-preview opener after “American Idol” on January 25. It showed strong staying power, when two months later it still pulled 11.8M for its regular time-slot premiere. The problem has been retention. The story just didn’t unfold week to week, and viewership has trailed off to below the 7-million mark. FOX might accept that for some shows, it might not be enough to save an expensive undertaking with A-list talent. Touch made such a splash that it’s hard not to see FOX keeping it around for another year, if only out of hope that a renewed campaign in the fall might rejuvenated the show. But that’s far from a safe bet – and we’ll post even odds that “Touch” will remain untouched.
