Meryl Streep? Well, that’s how we see it, since everyone else in the field makes a compelling case. Surely Sandra Bullock has to be seen as a frontrunner, not only for a fine performance as an adopt-a-mom in “The Blind Side,” but also because that film has earned stupefying amounts of money. Then again Gabourey Sidibe has been getting Oscar buzz ever since “Precious” hit theaters, a film voters will surely want to reward. And when it comes to sheer versatility and quality, one shouldn’t count out the always-dependable Helen Mirren in “The Last Station” or Carey Mulligan “An Education.” (For Mulligan there’s also the cute-as-a-button dark-horse factor, which has led to its own Oscar shocks in the past, e.g., Anna Paquin.) As for Streep, Our admiration runs eternal, and her performance in “Julia & Julia” was as good as it could have been – but the film was a light role in a film lighter than a soufflé. We loved Penelope Cruz last year in “Vicki Christina Barcelona,” and she was decent in “Nine,” but for us (and many others) we just couldn’t stomach the self-importance of that misguided musical. Anna Kendrick was cute in “Up in the Air,” playing a corporate hack who wants marriage and kids – but the role was a clichéd character piece, not a full-blown dramatic figure. Vera Farmiga of the same film had a chance at delivering that kind of figure – but we just didn’t see human complexity amid those big eyes and frequent-flyer miles. That leaves Maggie Gyllenhall, who could pull a shocker in the mostly un-seen “Crazy Heart,” as long as voters take the time to get the film into their Netflix queue. But really, folks, it’s all about Mo'Nique in the much-lauded “Precious,” not only because the competitors are lagging behind, but because her gritty performance delivered (and because voters are itching to reward this film). Well: Best Supporting Actor might be a slam-dunk for the second year in a row, for a performance equally insidious and unsettling. Since the release of “Inglourious Basterds” last summer audiences have been buzzing about Christoph Waltz’s portrayal of a genteel, ultra-polite officer – who just happens to be an SS butcher. And, like last year, Waltz stands head and shoulders above the competition. We’re scratching our heads about the nomination of Stanley Tucci, who is a great actor, but who was limited by Peter Jackson’s ham-fisted direction in “The Lovely Bones.” Woody Harrelson delivered in “The Messenger,” but then again almost no one has seen the film – and the same goes for Christopher Plummer playing Leo Tolstoy in “The Last Station.” So we’ll slot in the dependable Matt Damon in second place, who gave yet another inspired performance (along with a solid accent) in “Invictus.” But, really, put as much money as you can on Waltz in the night’s first major award. 2/2/09.
THE MARKET: Will this nominee win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor? Start with director Antoine Fuqua of “Training Day,” and the star of that film, the resurgent Ethan Hawke (“Daybreakers”). Then toss in Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, and Wesley Snipes (returning to “New Jack City” form), along with a ton of “oh-him-I-love-him!” character actors. The result is a dark and realistic urban thriller, reminiscent of HBO’s “The Wire.” So we’re stoked. As for the plot? It’s surely too complex for us to spoil. We’ll start with divergent storylines, as Gere’s character fights PTSD in the days before his retirement, as Hawke’s character struggles to make ends meet in expensive New York, and as Cheadle’s character tries to keep his cover with an evil-looking drug-lord played by Snipes. And yes, those storylines will collide and bodies will pile up – we said it was a genre piece – but on the way we expect a rich atmospheric exploration of a city that, despite post-Giuliani beliefs, still has a lot of crime. And with “Precious” likely to be reveling in Oscar glory in early March, audiences more than ever will be looking to the inner city. Despite the glitzy “Alice in Wonderland” for competition, “Brooklyn’s Finest” will surprise with a well-deserved $22 million opener. 2/1/10.
THE MARKET: “Brooklyn’s Finest” goes into wide release on March 5, 2010. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Remember it wasn’t always that way, until “300” blew the lid off of March 2007 with a $70 million debut. Then the hyped “Watchmen” followed suit in 2009, netting $55 million itself. This year, “Alice in Wonderland” kicks off the month, offering an offbeat 3D visual extravaganza that could easily have been released in May. Of course, we don’t need to add to the hype surrounding the film – given that it practically made the evening news when (gasp) a teaser trailer leaked early. Then again people have a right to be stoked. Tim Burton has had unbelievable staying power with audiences and with the Hollywood brass. He can’t mess up the story too much, since it’s based on a classic, with the minor twist that, this time, an attractive teen Alice will return to the wonderland of her youth. Johnny Depp is as huge as ever, and Anne Hathaway always helps. In a word, absolutely everything – marketing, casting, trailers – is shaping up beautifully. The next time this blockbuster makes the evening news, it will be when it opens to the tune of $60 million, if not much more. 1/24/10.
THE MARKET: “Alice in Wonderland” goes into wide release on March 5, 2010. With “The Crazies” we get down to those first moments when normal people start going downhill. And the result is . . . pretty spooky. This looks to be a slow-burning picture, as the illness eventually moves through a small rural community. The trouble first appears when an arsonist stands rock-still in his cell for, oh, ten hours. As more people go nuts, the local sheriff (Timothy Oliphant of “Hitman”) realizes that he’s got a problem. We gather that there’s a head zombie who has a pension for “Saw”-like medical procedures, so we expect plenty of cringe-worthy moments as the action moves to the local hospital. In the end, this one isn’t going to get nominated for Oscars – but hard-core fans have been left in the cold since the latest “Saw,” and we think “Crazies” has the chops and special-effects to give them what they want. Pent-up demand will drive “Crazies” to a strong take in the high teens. 1/24/10.
THE MARKET: “The Crazies” goes into wide release on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010. Heck: we’re not even sure if it’s “Beverly Hills Cop III.” The idea is simple: you have a buddy-team of cops, played by the familiar Bruce Willis and sidekick Tracy Morgan. Their characters have, shall we say, unorthodox methods of conducting police work – which includes car chases through graveyards and chaining crooks to a moving Crown Vic. Morgan does his “30 Rock” thing (in which he acts crazy), except it’s probably funnier now that he gets to swear. Willis is his usual play-it-cool regular guy – until he loses it and decks someone. And that’s it. We can’t tell if there’s much substance at all, which is a surprise given that the director is the normally reliable Kevin Smith (who is probably just trying to make some mainstream cash). Despite all of this carping, we are always realists, and even though we’re confident it’s a bad picture, everyone needs a little comic relief in post-football February. Kudos to the studio for perfect timing on that one. Expect this genre farce to open to $18 million, after which audiences will cop out on “Cop Out” for good.1/24/10.
THE MARKET: “Cop Out” goes into wide release on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010. Too weird. Of course, awards were a part of the original plan, when “Island” was slated for an Oct. 2 release date. Then Paramount booted it to February, for reasons never fully explained. One guess: maybe they fixed the film. The basic story is that Leo’s character and his sidekick (Mark Ruffalo) go to some island for the “criminally insane” – at which point freaky stuff starts happening and they get locked up too. Early trailers played up a psycho-drama angle, with Leo having lots of hallucinations, and this indeed looked boring. But recent trailers play up the mystery-thriller aspect, with shots of a labyrinthine prison, lots of sneaking around, and a killer cameo by Max von Sydow. Now that’s cool. So yes, despite our early skepticism, and despite studio tinkering, we’re re-juiced for what we’re guessing may be a new and improved “Shutter Island.” Audiences will be to: we predict $30 million for this deep winter surprise. 1/17/10.
THE MARKET: “Shutter Island” goes into wide release on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
