THE MARKET: “The Ruins” goes into wide release on Friday, April 4, 2008. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety on April 6? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $15, for example, would be worth $39 if the movie grosses $39 million. Trading closes April 4 at 9 a.m. ET.
THE LOWDOWN: Once upon a time there was a bestselling book by Scott Smith called “The Ruins,” which Stephen King called “the best horror novel of the new century.” Hence the movie, an apparent amalgamation of “Hostel,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and “Tremors.” Director Carter Scott waxes poetical about his creation: “You think it’s about evil Mayans that are going to keep them hostage. And then … it’s a monster movie – there’s a beast living down in the ruins. And it’s a f*cking vine that gets inside of you.”
THE PR: Peter Sciretta at slashfilm.com is no longer excited about “The Ruins.” If you, too, find your interest waning, enjoy another gem from our eloquent director: “I felt like the only way you could tackle a subject like this, in a film that’s going to be about a flesh-eating vine that’s going to invade your body, is to stay away from the comic and the camp and sort of fantastic as [much as] possible.” Right.
