THE MARKET: Will “Friday Night Lights” on NBC be renewed for the fall season by NBC or any other major or cable network? If the show is renewed for the fall, shares are worth $100. If it isn’t, they’re worth $0. Trading will close when a final announcement is made by NBC, or by June 11, whichever comes first. See TV confirmation guidelines.
THE LOWDOWN: One of the most critically praised shows of recent memory, ratings for “Friday Night Lights” have sagged for the second year in a row. The cancellation rumors have been flying since the strike. However, NBC recently revealed talks with DirectTV for a creative way to potentially save the show. Reveals TVseriesfinale.com: “More than likely, DirecTV and NBC will both air episodes but subscribers to the satellite TV provider will get treated to special content. Possible extra goodies include behind-the-scenes footage, extended scenes, or episodes debuting on DirecTV a few days before they air on NBC.” Will the lights stay on, on NBC or another cable network?
THE PR: “Jericho” had its peanuts campaign (where fans sent peanuts to CBS execs to persuade them to renew the show). Now “Cavemen” has its hair campaign (same formula, less tasteful package). Not to be outdone, VH1’s “Best Week Ever” blog is seeking to save “Friday Night Lights” by sending (yes) light bulbs to NBC. Sounds like a nice thing for a Viacom company to do for a rival conglomerate – unless they’re gunning for the show too?
