THE MARKET: Will “Wipeout” on ABC make it to a fifth episode? The reality show will premiere on Tuesday, June 24, at 8 p.m. ET and run weekly in that timeslot. Trading will close after a third episode is aired. If a fifth episode airs, shares are worth $100. If it doesn’t, they’re worth $0. See TV confirmation guidelines.
THE DATA: The latest project from Endemol USA, producers of hits like “Big Brother” and “Deal or No Deal,” “Wipeout” is reality show (full of humiliating challenges) that ABC hopes will draw fans of shows such as “Fear Factor.” “Wipeout” has the added bonus of The Dreadmill, which “will have contestants jumping hurdles on a 40-foot long treadmill at warp speed.”
OUR TAKE: “Wipeout” follows the lead of long popular Japanese shows that provide, more or less, human versions of “Mario Brothers” (see also Spike’s “MXC”). In ABC’s take everyday Joes compete for a chance at $50,000, but things stand between them and their money – like giant inflatable mushrooms surrounded by water and “The Dirty Balls.” (Um, what?) Judging by their other projects, it seems that Endemol has the magic touch that can make this ridiculous concept into a success. – Leigh Kunkel
