THE MARKET: “Hancock” goes into wide release on Wednesday, July 2, 2008. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety on July 6? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million. Trading closes on July 2 at 9 a.m. ET.
THE LOWDOWN: With “Hancock,” “Iron Man,” and “Dark Knight,” it’s the summer for action heroes with personal problems – just like last summer (“Spiderman 3”), and the one before (“X-Men 3”). In July Will Smith will try to sink to a new low as Hancock, “the alcoholic, deeply depressed superhero.” But according to Hollywood Reporter, maybe A-list stars are the ones who should be depressed, as their star power seems to be declining. Can Smith and co-star Charlize Theron overcome with “Hancock”?
THE PR: Bob Thompson sees “Hancock” being more successful than any other movie opening in July. Considering the competition includes “Dark Knight” and “The X Files,” that sounds like a bold prediction. Will “Hancock” deliver the box office goods?
