THE MARKET: The 3G iPhone will be released on Friday, July 11, 2008. How many phones will be sold in the first 24 hours? Each dollar of the share price represents 10,000 phones sold. Shares bought at $11, for example, would be worth $24 if 240,000 phones are sold in the first 24 hours. Trading closes July 11 at 9 a.m. ET.
THE DATA: Seth Gilbert wonders if the lowered price tag for the next-generation iPhone will triple demand. Last time around Apple moved 270,000 “in the first 30 hours.” Here’s an internal AT&T memo with all the information you could ever want or need to know about the 3G.
OUR TAKE:There are plenty of rumors swirling around the release of the 3G. Some say Apple will manufacture and ship 3 million of them in June; others claim that production problems will hamstring sales in the long run if not the short. It’s tough to know what’s up and what’s down, but it would certainly stand to reason that sales of the $199 device stand a good chance to outstrip the 270,000 sold in the first day at a price point of $499-$599. —Earl Munro
