THE MARKET: “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” goes into wide release on Friday, July 25, 2008. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety on July 27? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million. Trading closes July 25 at 9 a.m. ET.
THE DATA: The first “X-Files” film pulled in a $30 million opening weekend in June 1998, back when the show was a hot property. Will audiences return six years after the show came to its seeming end in 2002?
OUR TAKE: Ten years after the first “The X-Files” movie, Mully and Sculder are finding their way back to the big screen. What exactly they’ll be doing is difficult to say. The studio is keeping very close wraps on the storyline, apparently up to and including the relatively sparse trailer. Either that strategy will whet the appetites of the masses, or just send them running to competitors from the prior week. Did anyone mention “The Dark Knight”?
