WHILE “PUBLIC ENEMIES” gets the actual July 4 release, let’s face it – this year Independence Day (and its huge receipts) is all about the return of “Transformers.” Just two years after the first installment silenced critics with a $70 million release, Director Michael Bay is back with another go-round with orange fireballs and machines that largely turn into GM cars. Given the “Revenge of the Fallen” subtitle, we expect a darker and edgier “Empire Strikes Back” vibe, (in which the bad guys prevail and set up yet another sequel). From the visually stupefying trailer, we also expect “Transformers 2” to set, perhaps, the highest bar ever for action special effects. It will be big, but the Wednesday release makes forecasting tricky. Have fun predicting both first-day and five-day receipts on this one. 5/18/09.
THE MARKET: “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” goes into wide release on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. How much will it gross in its first day as first reported by Variety on June 25? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million in that day. Trading closes on June 24 at 9 a.m. ET.
