THE BUZZ FOR “BORAT” was so intense in the November of 2006 that it grossed $26 million in its opening weekend – in only 837 theaters. Of course success like that can only mean a sequel, and since the “Borat” persona is now cashed, Sacha Baron Cohen now returns as gay Austrian fashion reporter Brüno. Where “Borat” exposed themes of racism and sexism, expect the same, with a heaping dose of homophobia thrown in. Proof? Brüno will attend a swingers party, have a martial arts instructor show how to defend from an attacker with a dildo, and ask a bunch of NRA types, “Which of the ‘Sex and the City’ girls are you most like?” The question is whether America is sick of the shtick. And after viewing the shocking trailer we’re surprised to say, probably not, not yet. This one will open to round criticism from all sides, and a healthy $40 million take. 5/30/09.
THE MARKET: “Brüno” goes into wide release on Friday, July 10, 2009. How much will it gross in its first five days as first reported by Variety on July 12? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million in that day. Trading closes on July 10 at 9 a.m. ET.
