THE FIRST G.I. JOE had an All-American, Stephen Colbert hairdo, and was your basic heroic defender of the nation. Then a cartoon series in the 80s got blasted for “degrading” the original, as violent Joes turned badass to take on the terrorist ninjas of COBRA. Well, get ready for easily the nastiest Joes yet, in this effects-laden, high-adrenaline, super-violent reboot. The enemy is the same, although they are now hanging out in the equivalent of Atlantis. They’ve also managed to destroy the Eiffel Tower with some weird mossy bioweapon. So the Joes suit up – literally, as each Joe is given “accelerator” body armor that basically makes him Iron Man. The trailer is so frantic you can barely tell if there are big-name stars (we only noticed Dennis Quaid). And with “Mummy” director Stephen Sommers at the helm, expect the rest of the film to be equally fast-paced. Will it all be too much, or just the right formula for a sleepy August? We’ll set trading at $25 million and let you decide. 6/21/09.
THE MARKET: “G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA” goes into wide release on Friday, August 7, 2009. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety on August 9? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million in that day. Trading closes on August 7 at 9 a.m. ET.
