There are nineteen headliners, with A-Listers like Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, and Anne Hathaway making Topher Grace, Taylor Swift, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifah, and Bradley Cooper look like afterthoughts. It’s impressive as hell. But upon further thought we can’t help but be worried. Judging from the trailer, “Valentine’s Day” presents a bird’s-eye look at the lives of many (many) people on the year’s big day for romance. Men complain. Women complain. Connections occur. Proposals are offered and accepted. It sounds fine in theory, but with nineteen faces competing for airtime, it’s going to be impossible for “Valentine’s Day” to sustain an actual storyline for anyone. Instead, we expect an ain’t-life-grand montage of vignettes, with a few good one-liners, and the coherence of Cobb Salad. Critics will hate it, and star power alone will get this bloated monster some decent revenue. But audiences will see through the glitz – and the $20 million take will be a disappointment for this remarkably expensive outing. 1/10/10.
THE MARKET: “Valentine’s Day” goes into wide release on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million in that weekend. Trading closes at 9 a.m. on the day of the film’s opening.
RESEARCH: Google News :: IMDb Page :: Home Page
