GAY AUDIENCES CERTAINLY haven’t been always been well-served, and we’re not sure they’ll be exactly thrilled with indie comedy “I Love You Phillip Morris.” In the story Jim Carrey plays a stand-up guy with a southern accent. Loves his wife. Loves his kids. Sings in church. Then he gets smacked by a Lincoln – and wakes up saying he’s gay. Well, OK, we’ll buy it, as the film claims to be “based on a true story.” But if things weren’t un-PC enough already, the altered Carrey character now wants to steal everything in sight, in pretty much any old way – embezzlement, fraud, shoplifting, whatever. Of course he gets sent to prison, which doesn’t turn out to be too bad because there he meets the titular Phillip Morris, played by Ewan McGregor. Cue the violins as the two fall in love. The rest is all madcap black humor as the two try to stay together while behind bars. Again, we hardly expect gay audiences to like their sexual orientation being linked to stealing and head injuries. There are more red flags: the film barely has a presence on IMDb, no less an actual website, so already the studio is showing little marketing love for “Philip Morris.” Expect a single-digit disappointment for this ill-fated oddball of a film. 1/10/10.
THE MARKET: “I Love You Phillip Morris” goes into wide release on Friday, March 26, 2010. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety?
