THOSE OF YOU who are still waiting for word on a renewal of “Caprica” – and still holding those unresolved shares at Media Predict – will need no warning: Syfy can take a long time making up its mind. Then again, we’re not sure we expect such hand-wringing over the less-risky, lower-budget “Haven,” debuting Friday. Indeed we think a renewal nod might be easy for Syfy, as we see a lot of positive signs. The biggest draw, of course, is that show is based on a Stephen King novel, in this case The Colorado Kid. In both the novel and the show, a special agent wanders into a small town, which seems to contain many residents with various supernatural afflictions. That leads to a “Twin Peaks” storyline, in which freaky stuff happens en route to some larger potboiler mystery. We like Emily Rose as a the confused but persistent agent, and the distinctive Eric Balfour (“24”), offers an engaging creepiness without seeming like a jerk. Of course Stephen King source-material is hardly rare – and we fully expect to see a mini-series based on his credit card bills someday – but the trailers work, and enough Friday-night fans will seek refuge in “Haven” to give it a second season. Buy. 7/7/09.
THE MARKET: Will “Haven” be renewed by Syfy? The drama will premiere Friday, July 9. Trading will close immediately after its scheduled sixth episode. If the network approves a second season, shares are worth $100. If it doesn’t, they’re worth $0.

I think the worst part is I could see it happening. And depending on what is actually in those bills, it might actually work. (With some poetic liberties, of course, but when has Hollywood ever not taken liberties?)
