WE ARE COMPLETISTS here at MP, and we love covering most every genre – except the ubiquitous spoof movie. Why? Well there isn’t much to say. They keep doing the same thing, and they keep making money. The latest, “Vampires Suck,” will of course spoof “Twilight” and the global vampire craze. And since you can’t spoof just one movie, the film will take on – although they have no relation to the central theme – “Alice in Wonderland,” Lady Gaga, MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” and pretty much anything else that’s been hot in the past year. The point of it all? Well, money. The low-budget “Scary Movie 4” opened to a shocking $40 million in 2006, and studios have been chasing the easy cash ever since, with recent outings like “Epic Movie” ($18m opener), “Meet the Spartans” ($18m), and “Dance Flick” ($10m). Surely these movies offer serious margins – although failures like “Disaster Movie” ($5.8m) have come along. As for “Vampires,” the topicality is ideal, as “Twilight” is bigger than ever. Given the Wednesday opener, we’ll predict $22 million for a five-day haul. 7/19/10.
THE MARKET: “Vampires Suck” goes into wide release on Wednesday, August 18, 2010. How much will it gross in its first five days as first reported by Box Office Mojo? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million in that period. Trading closes at 9 a.m the day of the film’s opening.
