Mega Market: How Will "The Social Network" Open?

OK, NORMALLY WE reserve Mega Markets for popcorn releases like “Inception” or “Twilight” or whatever. But we’re internet nerds, folks, and we suspect some of you are too. If so, you have undoubtedly heard about, and are greatly anticipating, “The Social Network” – a “based on true events” account of the rise of Facebook in the early part of the decade. As we all know, the Facebook honeymoon is over, amid its escalating presence and alarming privacy concerns, so we don’t expect this film to go easy on Mark Zuckerberg and company. Rather it will be a dark tale of, apparently, betrayal, deceit, money, and stupefying ambition. Whether that’s true is up to question, as everyone loves to hate a winner. But certainly fascination with Zuckerberg and Facebook is at an all-time high, and the mistrust he excites is something we don’t see from a Steve Jobs or Larry Page, or, well anyone. That could mean great revenues. Then again real-events exposés seldom draw big numbers – we’re reminded of Oliver Stone’s “W,” also a fall release, which opened to only $10.5 million. We’ll be there opening night, but for the rest of the world this one will be all internet hype, but little box office bite, as it struggles to a $14 million opener. 7/26/10.
WHAT’S A MEGA? Mega Markets close one month before the currently scheduled opening weekend. All participants still in the market at the close of trading will immediately receive $200 in fantasy money for their participation.
THE MARKET: “The Social Network” goes into wide release on Friday, October 1, 2010. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Box Office Mojo? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $45, for example, would be worth $78 if the movie grosses $78 million in that day. Trading closes approximately 30 days before the film’s opening.
