THE MARKET: Will “Power of 10” on CBS make it past a third episode? The game show is scheduled to premiere in a special timeslot on Tuesday, August 7, at 8 p.m., and will run weekly on Wednesdays at the same time. Trading will cease the day before its scheduled third episode on August 15. If a fourth episode airs, shares are worth $100. If it doesn’t, they’re worth $0.
THE LOWDOWN: August may well be the cruelest month for television premieres, but CBS will break up the re-run doldrums with a heavily promoted new game show hosted by Drew Carey, “Power of 10.” While recent reality shows such as “Age of Love” and “Next Best Thing: Who Is the Greatest Celebrity Impersonator?” made it to that elusive fourth episode, the quick demise of the animated “Creature Comforts” shows that even during the summer, the execs are willing to pull the plug.
THE PR: Added incentive to cancel: if people start winning big on this thing, the network will be broke. In the show, a contestant first must answer one question worth $1,000. The next question is worth 10 times as much. Keep adding the zeros until you get to question number five, which will be worth $10 million. Hearkening back to “Family Feud,” questions will be based on responses to questions in national surveys. Some examples: “What percentage of Americans said they were virgins the day they got married?” and “How many Americans believe they are smarter than President George W. Bush?”
