How Will “Bee Movie” Open?
THE MARKET: “Bee Movie” goes into wide release on Friday, November 2, 2007. How much will it gross in its opening weekend as first reported by Variety on Sunday, November 4? Each dollar of the share price represents millions of dollars in sales. Shares bought at $15, for example, would be worth $39 if the movie grosses $39 million. Trading closes October 12 at 11:59 p.m. PST.
THE LOWDOWN: Jerry Seinfeld is the man. He just casually mentions he wants to do a movie about bees to Steven Spielberg, and a couple years later, he’s got a gigantic Dreamworks CG production centered around a bee who sues humans for their consumption of honey. Coming on the heels of talking animal triumphs “Ratatouille” and “Happy Feet,” this movie about bees is destined to hit some kind of honey pot. Will the buzz lead to the gold?
THE PR: The synopsis seems appropriately silly, saying “Having just graduated from college, a bee by the name of Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld) finds himself disillusioned with the prospect of having only one career choice – honey. As he ventures outside of the hive for the first time, he breaks one of the cardinal rules of the bee world and talks to a human, a New York City florist named Vanessa (Renée Zellweger).”
