THE MARKET: Alison Oliver’s Yoo-Hoo, Bunnie McFoo! is available for publication. Will it get a book deal or make the Project Publish Shortlist by September 17, 2007? If either of these happens, shares are worth $100. If neither happens, shares are worth $0.

THE AUTHOR: Alison Oliver is a graphic designer and partner at Sugar, a design studio in New York City. Prior to starting her own studio, Alison worked as a promotions designer for Mademoiselle magazine, and as a designer at a studio in Los Angeles that specialized in the entertainment industry.

THE LOWDOWN: Bunnie McFoo is as cute as (if not cuter than!) Hello Kitty, but with a brain … and some identity issues. She’s a curious, thoughtful cat who wonders why she feels like a bunny if she’s supposed to be a cat. What is she then, if not entirely cat or totally rabbit? This is Bunnie’s quandary in the enchanting Yoo-Hoo, Bunnie McFoo!, book one of a proposed series, What’s the Big Idea, Bunnie McFoo? With the help of her friends, Bunnie learns that what counts the most is how she feels on the inside, not what she looks like on the outside — or, to put it as sculptor Constantin Brancusi did, “What is real is not the external form but the essence of things,” which serves as the springboard for this captivating story. The author/illustrator uses Bunnie’s adventures to tap into children’s natural curiosity about the world and themselves, and in this way, the series concept is to make big ideas accessible to little people.

THE BUZZ: Referred from a literary agent actively representing the book.

From this book’s first day of trading, it has held pretty steady in the vicinity of 60 to 70 dollars per share. In the past 24 hours it has shot up almost 30 dollars per share and doubled its trade volume. Why, today, did so many people decide this book was brilliant? Fishy.

perhaps it shot up because people that were not aware of this means of looking at potential books were made aware & after reading about the books & their authors & illuatrators thought "Bunny" should get their vote.

No way! This will have no appeal to children. Those who are young enough to enjoy a book with this ratio of pictures to text won’t get it. Perhaps the author is making a veiled attempt at explaining sexual confusion, or even more mundane kinds of identity confusion, such as ethnicity. But the subject matter, whatever is meant, is too complex for the likely audience. "Topic" books for young children are about more overt problems— bullying, new baby sister, etc. So— no thanks!
