THE MARKET: Lori Culwell’s Hollywood Car Wash is one of five finalist book proposals in Project Publish. On Oct. 9, editors at Touchstone Books of Simon & Schuster will award one finalist a publishing deal. Will Lori walk away with the grand prize? If she does, shares are worth $100. If she doesn’t, shares are worth $0.
THE AUTHOR: Lori Culwell has been a writer for ten years, and is uniquely qualified to spill the Hollywood beans. Culwell grew up in Southern California and has connections to “the biz.” She and her husband currently split time between New York and Los Angeles. More about the book at Culwell’s MySpace page.
THE LOWDOWN: Hollywood Car Wash was published by Culwell in March 2007 through ASJA/iUniverse and captured the attention of fans and critics alike. It sold 2,000 copies during its first week in publication without any mass distribution power. How many copies would it sell if it was published, promoted, and distributed by a mainstream publishing house? One can only wonder. The Washington Post called Hollywood Car Wash an “It Book,” and it has already been optioned for television. On
Amazon.com Adam Belanoff, Co-Executive Producer, of “The Closer” said, “[I]t may be one of the most enjoyable page-turning reads of the year.”
THE BUZZ: A literary agent actively represents this book. See market advice.

Good, clean writing style. I think the prologue drags a little, but the again maybe I’m not the target audience for this one.

This one veers towards the teen chick-lit market. It’s not great literature but it’s catchy and would make a serviceable beach read. The author creates empathy for the protagonist and maybe it’ll give an "inside" view of Hollywood productions. A better title would help a lot.

What a great beach read! It is like picking up an US weekly magazine and just zoning out. Sometimes you just need a little escape from reality and this book hits the mark.
